Description:

Viking-age silver cut piece, found whilst metal detecting in the Hotham area in 2005. Roughly rectangular, decorated on one side with incised linear decoration. On the remaining fragment is a double line, a leaf, shading with small dots and some single lines. Probably Anglo-Scandinavian, perhaps from a brooch and of 11th century date. An example of "hack silver", used by the Vikings as a rough and ready form of currency.
