Description:
Denarius of Julia Mamaea, the mother of the emperor Severus Alexander (222-235AD). From Swaythorpe Farm, Kilham, excavations in 1998 (context 22). Obverse: [IULIA M] AMAEA [AUG], portrait with braided hair, facing right. Reverse: IUNO CONSERVA[TRIX], figure of the goddess Juno standing left, holding patera and sceptre; at her feet a peacock. The coin is about 50% silver, 50% copper - typical for the debased currency of this period.
