Description:
Silver denarius of Servius Sulpicius Galba, Roman emperor (68-69AD). Part of a hoard of 15 found by metal detecting at North Dalton in September 2006. Obverse: bare headed portrait facing right. Legend: IMP SER GALBA AVG. Reverse: oak wreath containing SPQR OB CS. The reverse abbreviations refer to the Senate and People of Rome and also suggest that Galba was 'saving the lives of citizens', presumably by restoring good government after the tyrannical reign of the emperor Nero. In fact Galba proved an unpopular emperor and was assasinated after only a few months. This coin was minted at Rome in August-October 68AD.
