View through Queen's Gate, Beverley, with the Minster towers visible in the distance (down what is now Keldgate). Woman standing to the right of arch. Written underneath in pencil is "Caroline Hartley, nee Brereton fecit". Caroline Brereton was an amateur artist in Beverley in the mid 19th century. Very little is known about her. On the back of the drawing is the following note, written in ink, apparently by the artist herself: "This Bar was pulled down in 1812. I put this drawing before Richard Horner (or Hosner?) a bricklayer with some others, asking him if he knew any of the places depicted: he picked this one out at once and said "that's Keldgate Bar, I helped to pull it down in 1812." Horner at the time this conversation took place was an inmate of the Beverley workhouse where he soon after died in the year [a space follows] being then in his 81st year - His father who was a Builder & Bricklayer & it was probably owing to that Richard Horner was at work at so early an age." This drawing and the note must date to after 1867, the year of Caroline's marriage. In a card mount.
