Description:

Head stud type brooch from watching brief at Granville Court Hornsea, (grid ref TA2062 4843), in 1995. Copper alloy (cast). Circular stud on head, with remains of red enamel, short wings with three moulded steps on each. Central step has incised lines. The narrow bow has a curved profile and is decorated with centrally placed diamond-shaped cells (filled with yellow enamel) with red enamel filled triangles either side. Decorative zone ends in a groove. Simple moulded spot with incised lines. Eight coiled pin on reverse, one coil forming the pin. Separately applied chain of wire passes through the coil and ends in a loop. Deep catch plate, file marks on back of bow and catch plate. The site lay within the area of an Anglian cemetery. Found in sandy silt of ditch 15 (context 6). Dated to 2nd century AD.
