Title: Anglo-Saxon (?) skull
Item Name: Ecofacts

Description:

Reconstructed skull (lacking frontal part including jaw bones). Found in Hull Museum stores and later transferred to East Riding. Precise provenance unknown, but thought to be from Sewerby and probably Anglo-Saxon. See also 2004.4.2. It is possible that this is the missing skull from grave 41 of the Anglian cemetery at Sewerby, excavated in 1959, which is shown in both a photograph of the grave and a field sketch of it. When the grave 41 box was checked in 2009, other bones were present, but the skull was found to relate to grave 45. Corresondence in the site archive does indicate that some of the Sewerby finds did pass through Hull Museums, so the confusion may have occurred then.

Culture: Anglo-Saxon
Materials: bone
ID_Number: ERYMS : 2004.4.1
