Title: Environmental samples
Item Name: Ecofacts

Description:

4 bags of environmental samples from watching brief at 28 Eastgate, North Newbald (grid ref SE9132 3685), in 1999. Three contexts were sampled, of which two were analysed at EAU's laboratory. Context 18 included a charred grain - barley? - insufficient for dating purposes. Context 16 included charred bread or club wheat grains (Triticum aestivo compactum), possibly oats (Avena) and peas (Pisum cf Sativum). The wheat is likely to be of late Prehistoric date. The site lies within the area of the Medieval village. 38 late Bronze Age features (c1000-600BC) were recorded, mostly postholes, but also one possible hearth. The postholes may represent several different phases of buildings (possibly rectangular). Traces of ditches and pits may represent allotments and domestic waste disposal in the Medieval period.
