Title: Silver gilt book clasp
Item Name: Fixtures and Fittings

Description:

An incomplete silver gilt book clasp (Howsam type A.9.2) found by metal detecting at Bainton in October 2018. Dated to the 14th or 15th centuries. Rectangular box form, with one open and one closed end. The closed end has a decorative panel with a four leaf design surrounded by an irregular pattern of incised lines. There is a recess on the reverse of this panel. The rest of the object is plain apart from transverse grooves adjoining the decorated end panel. The open end has a rivet through it. Apparently made from four separate sheets soldered together, there are remains of what may be leather inside the aperture.
