Item Name: Heating and Lighting

Description:

Sandstone, four examples all burnt red. Excavtion: Kilham Long Barrow (TA 056 673, various trenches, all site coded), 1965-1969 & 1971. KLB was excavated by Terry Manby between 1958 and 1969. After a Mesolithic occupation evidenced by pits and hearths, there was a period of cultivation before the monument was erected (perhaps around 3000BC). A trapezoidal timber structure, with a burial chamber and timber facade at the east end was built. There were two phases, with some burning between the two phases. The whole structure was then covered by a chalk and earth mound. This has now been almost entirely removed by ploughing. A Bronze Age ring ditch further to the east was also investigated in the excavations.
