Made by Mr. Bird, cabinet maker and prominent Liberal, for evidence at a court case at York assizes in 1868 following charges of assault during a political riot in Beverley. The Conservative party headquarters were above the shop and were invaded to investigate allegations of bribery. Anthony Trollope was one of the candidates and lost. Beverley lost both of her M.P.s as a result and subsequently shared one with East Riding.
