Description:
Neville Hobson, M.C., J.P., founder of the St. Mary's, Beverley company of the Church Lads (and later also Girls) Brigade. He commanded the company from 1908 to 1975. In the early days, the company was more like a military organisation. At the outbreak of World War I, Hobson and 12 senior members joined the Green Howards regiment. Several CLB members were killed serving in France. For most of its existence, the company has been based in a former warehouse in George Street. A uniformed drum and bugle band was an early feature of the company and continues to this day, performing around the country and abroad. From 1979, the company admitted girls. This and subsequent photos of the company, were kindly loaned by the current Trustees of the Beverley company.
