Nodule of Quartz and Hematite. Quartz (rock crystal) is a very common silica based mineral, found in a very wide range of rocks - including gneiss, granites and quartzites. Hematite is the most commonly found iron ore. Apart from its use in metal production, a red-brown pigment can be produced by crushing this mineral, which has been used for make-up. Found in Cumberland. Part of the T.H. Riley collection, transferred from Doncaster Museum in 1963.
