Nodules of garnet crystals in lava, found in 1963. Part of the T.H. Riley collection, transferred from Doncaster Museum in 1963. Garnet is actually a group name for a variety of gemstones which can be purplish-red, orange-red, green or even colourless. They are found as far apart as Brazil, India and the Ural Mountains in Russia. Garnets have been used in jewellery in this country since the Anglo-Saxon period.
