Item Name: Religion or Ritual
Description:
Culture: Anglo-Saxon
Materials: bone
ID_Number: ERYMS : 1996.16
Item Name: Religion or Ritual
Description:
Several bags of human bone and some loose. From grave 41 of the Anglian cemetery, Home Farm, Sewerby (5th-7th century AD), excavated in 1959/1974. The occupant of grave 41 (a woman of 35-45 years) may have been buried alive, to judge from her unusual burial posture - face down, limbs bent and with a stone on her lower back. See also 2004.4.2 for the probable skull from this burial, which became separated from the rest of the remains in post excavation study/conservation. The burial was immediately above grave 49, that of a younger woman and which contained (for this cemetery) rich grave goods.
