Description:
Medieval silver gilt crucifix, found by metal detecting at Stamford Bridge on 7/11/2010.Possibly part of a larger object, such as a book binding, a casket or a shrine. The upper section and Christ's arms are broken off. The body of the cross is a tubular column with a double ridged foot, marked on the underside with an incised cross. The figure of Christ was cast separately and then soldered to the cross. He is depicted with a radiant halo, wearing a loin cloth and with his feet crossed at the ankles. A parallel in the British Museum collection suggests a date in the late 15th or early 16th century.
