Three Red Abalone shells (Haliotis Rufescens), from California. Two polished or cleaned and one with roughened surface containing marine growths. Part of the Pamplin shell collection. Abalones are also known as ear shells, because of their shape. Types with colourful interiors are often made into jewellery and the creatures themselves are sometimes eaten.
