Purple Dye Murex shell (Murex Brandaris), from the Mediterranean Sea. White and pale yellow. Part of the Pamplin shell collection. In ancient times, the Phoenicians and later, the Romans, used dye extracted from this type of shell to produce purple cloth. Purple being considered a royal colour, its use was generally restricted to the clothing of the aristocracy or royalty.
