Title: Lead sack seal

Description:

Russian lead sack/bag seal. With a symbol of a cross on a shield on one side. The other side bears the letters RB 12K within a circle of pellets. The 12K probably indicates the rate of customs duty imposed - 12 kopecks in a rouble. Such seals were applied to Russian flax/hemp sacks in the late 18th/early 19th centuries as part of the customs process when exporting goods through Baltic sea ports. Part of metal detecting collection belonging to the late Terry Britten.
