Title: Beaker & other pottery sherds
Item Name: Containers

Description:

Sherds from a Bronze Age pottery beaker: fine buff fabric decorated with cord impressions. Probably other fabrics present as well and includes some Roman-British material also. From excavations at Kilham Long Barrow (upper fill of quarry ditches), 1965-1969 & 1971. KLB was excavated by Terry Manby between 1958 and 1969. After a Mesolithic occupation evidenced by pits and hearths, there was a period of cultivation before the monument was erected (perhaps around 3000BC). A trapezoidal timber structure, with a burial chamber and timber facade at the east end was built. There were two phases, with some burning between the two phases. The whole structure was then covered by a chalk and earth mound. This has now been almost entirely removed by ploughing. A Bronze Age ring ditch further to the east was also investigated in the excavations.
