Item Name: Food Preparation and Consumption
Description:
Clay, red-brown, pedestal foot and internally bevelled rim. Reconstructed. Also some loose sherds. Excavation: Kilham Long Barrow (ring ditch pit 1), 1971. KLB was excavated by Terry Manby between 1958 and 1969. After a Mesolithic occupation evidenced by pits and hearths, there was a period of cultivation before the monument was erected (perhaps around 3000BC). A trapezoidal timber structure, with a burial chamber and timber facade at the east end was built. There were two phases, with some burning between the two phases. The whole structure was then covered by a chalk and earth mound. This has now been almost entirely removed by ploughing. A Bronze Age ring ditch further to the east was also investigated in the excavations.
