Description:
Bronze Age pottery urn; red-brown clay, decorated with a herringbone design and horizontal lines. This pot was found during excavations at Kilham Long Barrow (ring ditch, trench H.S pit 2) and was reconstructed from many small pieces. KLB was excavated by Terry Manby between 1958 and 1969. After a Mesolithic occupation evidenced by pits and hearths, there was a period of cultivation before the monument was erected (perhaps around 3000BC). A trapezoidal timber structure, with a burial chamber and timber facade at the east end was built. There were two phases, with some burning between the two phases. The whole structure was then covered by a chalk and earth mound. This has now been almost entirely removed by ploughing. A Bronze Age ring ditch further to the east was also investigated in the excavations.
