Elwell, Mary Dawson
Portrait by Mary Holmes (later Elwell) of her husband to be Frederick Elwell, painting at his easel. The sitter is facing left (as viewed) painting onto a canvas, supported on a large easel. He is holding his spare brushes in his left hand, with his artist's palette supported by his left arm. Fred is depicted smoking a pipe and is seated on a low, red fabric covered wooden stool with curved legs. A dark red curtain forms most of the background. Signed "M.D. Holmes, 1913" bottom left. Oil painting on canvas, in a gold painted wooden frame. Two partial labels on the reverse of the canvas note title, artist and her address - The B[ar House], B[everley]. The painting was exhibited at the Royal Academy (no.103).
