Item Name: Painting
Maker: Elwell, Mary Dawson
Undated bedroom scene, set in a room which looked out onto the York Road. With twin beds, table and chairs and fire place. North Bar Without and Wylies House can be seen through one window. A woman is standing at a dressing table combing her hair. Mary lived at this house following her marriage to Fred Elwell in 1914 and she painted many scenes of its interior. The device of framing a view of a town through a window was typical of the Camden Town group of painters and the woman at a mirror was a theme explored by many of Mary's contemporaries - including Elizabeth Nourse and Ethel Sands. 'Antique look' gilt wood frame. One of 55 works bequeathed by Fred Elwell.
