Elwell, Frederick William
Portrait of Mary Dawson Holmes, who married the artist Frederick William Elwell in 1914. She is wearing a grey dress and a large black hat and is carrying a basket. This may have been Fred and Mary's first meeting and their shared love of art (she was also a talented painter) may have brought them together. Mary's god-daughter, Phyllis Downham, remarked that they were "a happy couple, so interested in life and their chosen way of it." Gilt wood frame.
