Item Name: Painting
Elwell, Frederick William, Elwell, Mary Dawson
'Swiss style' landscape, with church in right foreground, the clock face showing 7 o'clock. Chalet style bildings, with mountains in the background. Painted on a wooden panel, with moulded gilt wood frame. The painting was originally given to Mr Symmons (a farmer), in exchange for some photographs of pigs. Elwell used these for another of his paintings -"Pigs in barn." Both Fred and Mary Elwell produced several paintings in the region of Zermatt and the Matterhorn in the Swiss Alps, during the period 1937-9 (they spent Christmas in the area on one occasion). On the outbreak of World War II they had to leave rather hastily.
