Reverend Kilvington began his career as a regimental chaplin during the Napoleonic wars and served in Portugal, Spain and in the Waterloo campaign, he left the army in 1816 and became the vicar of Brignall South Yorkshire. He married Mary Margeret Napier who was the daughter of the seventh Lord Napier, they had one son Francis Henry who served in the Crimean war and died on the way back to Britain. The occasion of Kilvington's visit to Bridlington is unknown. His watercolours and drawings may have been produced whilst he was staying with a local cleric or whilst taking a holiday he is not known to have exhibited professionally.
