Apprenticed to his father who was a draper in old town Bridlington. Later he set up his own photography studio next to Christ Church in Quay Road. He married Jane Eliza Parkinson (1828 - 1898). His childhood passion for drawing eventually led him to take up painting as a way of life. From 1871 he began painting maritime scenes begining with a number of works relating to the Great Gale of that year. He is believed to have painted over 2400 works. He had one son who at the time of his death was living in Sydney, Australia.
