When and where should I put my bin out?

You must put your bin out on the street at the edge of your property by 7am on the morning of your collection day.

If you live on a farm or have a private ten foot, you must place your green bin at the collection point we have agreed. This is usually at the nearest point to the public road.

Use our bin collection checker to view collection dates for your property:

Please note: your collections will temporarily change following a bank holiday. Check the bin collection checker to find out when your bins will be collected over these periods.

How do I find out about changes to my bin collection dates?

All households in East Riding will be sent a letter outlining changes to their bin collection dates. The changes will be taking place in two phases.

Phase 1: changes from 19 July 2021

The bin collection dates will change from the 19 July 2021 for residents living in the following areas:

  • Hedon
  • Withernsea
  • Holderness villages
  • Bridlington
  • Hornsea
  • Driffield.

Please note: if you live in one of the areas listed above, you will receive a letter in early July with more information about the changes.

If you haven't received your letter by 16 July, email refuseadmin@eastriding.gov.uk.

Phase 2: changes from 16 August 2021

The bin collection dates will change from the 16 August 2021 for residents living in the following areas:

  • Beverley
  • West Hull villages
  • Goole
  • Market Weighton
  • Pocklington
  • Stamford Bridge
  • Howden
  • Snaith.

Please note: if you live in one of the areas listed above, you will receive a letter in August with more information about the changes.

If you haven't received your letter by 13 August, email refuseadmin@eastriding.gov.uk.

Why are bin collection dates changing?

The council has invested in new route scheduling software. It will allowed us to provide bin collection service to the 9000 new properties expected in East Riding over the next six years.

To stay as efficient and as cost-effective as possible, as well as minimise our carbon impact, we have put completely new collection rounds together.

This means that most residents will have the collection days of one or both bins changed. Even if your bin date has not changed, you may find the time of collection has, so it is important to ensure your bin is out by 7am on your day of collection.

When will I receive a new bin collection calendar?

The letter you will receive outlining the changes to your bin collection dates will include an updated bin collection calendar with dates until November 2022. The usual November/December calendar will not be included this year.

An easy way to find updated information about your bin collection dates is to download our free bin collection app.

Can you remind me to put my bin out?

New free bin collection app

East Riding of Yorkshire council is introducing a new app that:

  • allows you to get a reminder about your bin collection dates based on your preferences
  • automatically shows any changes to your bin collection dates during holidays or due to bad weather or road closures
  • shows what you can put in each bin.

Download the East Riding App

Once you install the app, you will be asked to add your address. The app will then be automatically updated with the new bin collection dates for your property.

Text message service

You can sign up for the text message service, which can send reminders for your different bins the night before they are due to be collected. Simply search for your property using the bin collection checker above to get your calendar code. Then text your 'calendar code' to '07507 307088'.

Please note: The text message service will be not be available between 16 July 2021 and 16 August 2021.

You will be automatically unsubscribed from your old calendar code when the service ends on 16th July. If you want to keep using the text reminder then please sign up again after 16 August 2021 using your new calendar code.

What can I put in my bins?

To view information relating to your different coloured bins, visit the specific bin colour page:

Why wasn't my bin collected?

The most common reasons for a blue bin not being collected are:

  • you didn’t put it out before 7am on your scheduled collection day
  • it wasn’t accessible to our crew
  • the lid wasn’t fully closed
  • there was a reason why we couldn’t accept your waste and a tag will have been attached to your bin explaining why
  • parked vehicles may have stopped our bin lorry reaching your property
  • it’s before 4.30pm on the day of collection - the bin crew may still come and collect your waste.

If none of the above reasons apply, find out if we can come back and collect it for you.
