Changes to other bin days

When weekly brown bin collections begin in your area, your blue and green bin collection days will also change - but they will still be collected fortnightly.

Every household received a new bin collection calendar in February, showing all collection dates for 2026/27.

If you use the East Riding of Yorkshire Council app and have 'bin-day reminders' turned on, you’ll automatically receive notifications for your updated collection days.

You can also check your bin collection dates online.

Why we’re doing it

The aim is simple:

  • make food and garden waste recycling easier
  • reduce how much food ends up in your green bin
  • cut carbon emissions from the waste we all produce.

And, you’ll have cleaner, fresher bins - especially in the summer months!

Required by government

We’re doing it because the law requires it, the environmental benefits are significant, and it is paid for by the government - not the council.

Every council in England is required to provide a weekly food waste service. Read more on GOV.UK:

Environmental benefits

Food waste is still the biggest single material in East Riding’s general waste bins — around 23% of everything thrown into green bins. When it goes into your green bin, it has to be burned, which wastes resources and increases emissions.

Weekly food waste collections make it much easier for everyone to recycle their scraps instead, ensuring they are turned into useful compost rather than being lost as waste.

Take a look at the environmental benefits pushing this change:

How it helps the environment
  • Cuts greenhouse gas emissions
Food waste in your green bins gets sent to be burned. This produces carbon dioxide which is a major contributor to climate change. Weekly collections help ensure more food waste is recycled instead. Take a look at the benefits of recycling your food waste and how we turn it into compost.
  • More compost made
The more often food is collected, the more of it gets diverted from general waste from your green bin, and turned into nutrient-rich compost for farms, land restoration and for you, in our compost giveaways.
  • Helps the UK meet national climate targets
Reducing carbon dioxide from wasted food is one of the fastest ways to reduce emissions - something the UK is legally required to do.
  • Boosts national recycling performance
Food waste is the single biggest material in household rubbish. Putting it in your brown bin improves national recycling rates dramatically.

How it’s funded

This change is fully-funded by the UK Government.

The government has provided East Riding of Yorkshire Council with nearly £3 million specifically to help roll out weekly food waste collections.

This funding covers things like bins, caddies, extra staff and collection vehicles.

That means the cost of introducing weekly collections does not come from council tax and does not take money away from other services such as pothole maintenance or children’s services.

Please note:
This government funding is ring-fenced, which means it can only be used for this purpose. It cannot be used for roads, potholes or other services.
