Weekly brown bin collections

We’re rolling out a weekly food waste collection service. Together, we can reduce the amount of food waste going in the green bin.

This is a big change, and we need everyone on board to make it work.

When it's happening

Your food and garden waste will be collected every week from your brown bin. This will happen in stages across the East Riding:

This will happen in stages across the East Riding:

  • The first stage began on 9 February 2026.
  • The second stage will begin on 8 February 2027.

Why we're doing this

Don't burn it - give it new life

  • Food in your green bin is burned, releasing pollutants into the air.
  • Food in your brown bin is transformed into compost that feeds our land and supports wildlife.

A small switch — a big impact.

How it’s being funded

Weekly food waste collections are fully funded by the government:

  • No money is being taken from road repairs, social care or any other council service.
  • You're getting this new weekly service — at no extra cost.
  • Your council tax is not paying for this service, the government is.

Start recycling your food!

Small actions make a huge difference.

You only need a kitchen caddy, some liners and your brown bin. Then do the following:

  • Collect scraps, peelings and leftovers in your caddy.
  • Empty your caddy into your brown bin when it's full.
  • Put your brown bin out every week.

Feel proud knowing you're doing something good for the environment!

What happens to your recycled food

Your food waste is turned into something useful - not wasted.

  • Everything from your brown bin goes to a local composting facility.
  • It's turned into high-quality compost - and given back to you at our giveaways!
  • That compost also supports farming and helps grow healthier green spaces.

And it all starts with what you put in your kitchen caddy.

Why not compost at home?

You can turn your own food scraps into something amazing:

  • Home composting is simple and low-cost.
  • It's great for gardens, wildlife and soil health.
  • You don’t need to be an expert — anyone can make rich, healthy compost at home.
