Disabled parking places

A disabled parking place can be a marked space on the road outside or near the property of a disabled resident. Disabled parking places are also introduced in areas like town centres and outside shopping areas. They provide essential parking access for those who face challenges parking near their home or in busy areas.

Please note: a disabled parking place can be used by anyone with a valid Blue Badge, even if it's right outside your home. It does not belong solely to you.

To be able to request a disabled parking place near your home you must:

  • find it difficult to locate suitable parking close to where you live
  • live at the property where you’re applying for the disabled parking place have a vehicle registered to the address where you’re applying for the disabled parking place
  • hold a valid Blue Badge
  • provide evidence that you receive higher-rate PIP (Personal Independence Payment), Attendance Allowance or DLA (Disability Living Allowance) payments. If you are not in receipt of a disability benefit then you must be able to provide evidence from a medical professional.

What happens after a request is submitted?

Once you submit your application an officer from the Traffic Management team will assess it and advise you if the work can take place.

Please note: this process can take up to 12 months to complete.

Not all sites are suitable for a bay despite the circumstances of the applicant. This might be because:

  • the requested land is not under the control of East Riding of Yorkshire Council's highways department
  • placing a parking bay in this location could endanger you or other road users
  • the bay would be too close to a junction, or would block a turning area
  • there are already parking restrictions in place
  • the area requested is unsuitable due to block turning requirements
  • the road is too narrow, or does not have a suitable space for the bay
  • you have access to off-street parking, such as a garage, yard or driveway, or your property is suitable for off-street parking with the addition of a dropped kerb.

If we cannot provide a disabled parking place near your home, you will be notified of the reason.
