Rivers, canals and waterways

Our waterways, ranging from natural chalk streams rising high on the Yorkshire Wolds and hidden havens to rapid rivers and working navigations, add greatly to the attractiveness and prosperity of the local area and to the quality of life of our residents.  They are important for many reasons, including supporting economic resilience, navigation, waterborne freight, biodiversity, land drainage, flood risk management, tourism, heritage, outdoor learning and recreation.  This variety of purpose and function means that our waterways must be managed carefully and in partnership with others.
