I'm moving house, what do I need to do?

Moving home can often be a difficult process when it should be an exciting time as you prepare to move into your new home.

You need to tell us who is moving in or out of the property, and whether you're moving to, out of, or within the East Riding.

If you already live in East Riding, you will already have an account, you just need your existing council tax account number which can be found on your last bill. While registering your new address, don’t forget to register for paperless billing. Once you have registered your new address, you’ll be sent an email asking you to log into your account to view your bill.

What do I do if I am new to the area?

If you're new to East Riding or this is your first home, and want to register for council tax, on the site you arrive at from using the button below, navigate to the "Tell us that you have moved home" section, and select, "I am moving into the East Riding of Yorkshire". You will be unable to register for our new online council tax service until you have completed this step. It’s that simple.

While registering your new address, don’t forget to register for paperless billing. Once you have registered your new address, you’ll be sent an email asking you to log into your account to view your bill.

Once you are in your account, you will also be able to set up a Direct Debit. This is our preferred method of collection, but you won’t be able to do this until a new bill has been sent to you.

The number of people in my household is changing, what should I do?

If you are the only person over the age of 18 living in a property you may be eligible for a discount of 25 per cent. You can only claim this discount at your main home. You can’t claim a single person discount for a second home.

If someone has moved out temporarily, for example the person is working away and has left you as the only resident, you won’t be able to claim the discount because the other person’s main residence hasn’t changed.

Apply for a single person discount because you are the only person aged 18 years or older living in your home

You will need to cancel your discount if you are no longer the only person over 18 living in the property.

Cancel a single person discount because someone else aged 18 years or older has moved into your home
