Council tax

Council tax pays for the services provided by the council in the East Riding. Without this funding we would not be able to provide essential services or help those in need. Your council tax bill includes elements we collect to fund the work of the police, fire and rescue services, as well as your town or parish council. We collect this on their behalf.

It is important that you pay your council tax, when it is due, so that we do not start legal proceedings to recover any money that’s owed.

Set up a Direct Debit

The safest and most secure way to pay your council tax is by Direct Debit. Why not join the 8 out of 10 residents who have already signed up? We offer a variety of payment dates to make paying your council tax bill easier.

To set up a Direct Debit you need to register on our secure online council tax service.

If you do not have an account already, instructions on how to register can be found on the online council tax account page.

You can choose to pay on the 1st, 5th, 15th or 25th of the month in either:


• 10 monthly instalments (April to January)
• 12 monthly instalments (April to March).


If your bill is issued after April, the number of instalments you can pay over will reduce each month.

Change your Direct Debit after changing your bank account

If you move house

If you are paying your council tax by Direct Debit, you do not need to change the details when you move house.

Once you have told us your new address, we will set up a new Direct Debit for that property and send you a new bill. This will show you how much your payments will be and when they are due. If you are registered to receive paperless bills, we will tell you when your new bill is ready to view online.

Monthly instalment amounts and dates

Council tax is usually payable on the 1st, 5th, 15th or 25th of each month. You can easily check when you are due to pay, and how, much by registering to manage your account online.

Your online council tax account also allows you to change your Direct Debit payment date.
