Council tax

If you don't pay your council tax

I can’t pay my council tax bill

We know that sometimes things don’t go as planned. You get unexpected bills, your working hours are reduced, or your kids need new shoes for school. Things like that can mean you don’t have enough money to pay your council tax.

You must get in touch with us as soon as possible so we can work together to make sure your council tax payments are met. If you contact us you are less likely to have costs added to your bill.

The debt recovery process

The law decides who is responsible for paying council tax - you can’t choose not to pay. If you do not pay your council tax, we will start the debt recovery process. If you continue to not pay, extra charges will be added to your debt. You may have to go to court. In some cases, we can take what you owe directly from your wages or benefits.
