YORSwitch, Cheaper Heating Oil Together

By taking advantage of our bulk buying power, we aim to agree cheaper prices with the oil suppliers.

What is YORSwitch, Cheaper Heating Oil Together?

East Riding of Yorkshire Council are working in partnership with Humber and Wolds Rural Community Council (HWRA), to deliver a bulk buying scheme for heating oil. HWRA is an independent charity working to improve the sustainability and vibrancy of rural communities, and together, we aim to save members money by bringing communities together to make the most of their bulk buying power. The scheme is open to households, community buildings and businesses that use heating oil.

How does it work?

YORSwitch works by bulk buying heating oil to get the best deal on the market.  Residents, businesses and community groups pay a small annual fee towards covering the cost of running the scheme.  Members will be contacted monthly for orders. The supplier offering the best deal will get the order, members then pay the supplier direct.

How does it work?

1.  Sign up!

Download and complete the membership form and return via:

Email: oil@hwrcc.org.uk

Tel: (01652) 637700

2.  Wait to hear from your local coordinator

We will let your local coordinator know that you have joined the scheme. If your community does not have a coordinator, we will work with you directly.

3.  Place an order

Each month, your local coordinator will ask you if you’d like to place an order. If you do, complete the order form and send to your coordinator before the deadline.  Your order increases our negotiating power, so once submitted, we regard it as binding. Members without a local coordinator can order directly with Humber and Wolds Rural Community Council (HWRCC).

4.  Sit back whilst we negotiate the price

Each month, we negotiate the best price from a wide range of local suppliers. Your local coordinator will inform you who the supplier is, the price per litre (exclusive of VAT – currently at 5%) and the date of delivery. This information will also be displayed on the Humber and Wolds Rural Community Council (HWRCC) website:

Humber and Wolds Rural Community Council (HWRCC) (external website)

5.  Pay the supplier and take delivery of your oil

The supplier will get in touch directly to arrange payment and your oil will be delivered approximately 10 working days after the order deadline.

How much does it cost?

The annual membership fee is payable to Humber and Wolds Rural Community Council (HWRCC) and will contribute to the administration and delivery of the scheme:

  • Household - £20
  • Community building - £30
  • Business: - Up to 5 employees: £30, 6-10 employees: £40, 11-50 employees: £50, Over 50 employees: £100

How much can I save?

YORSwitch, Cheaper Heating Oil Together, aims to cut the cost of heating bills. Similar schemes in other areas have achieved savings of up to 10p/litre. Savings depend on market forces and supply and demand but all the savings will be passed on to our members.

You can see the outcome of recent orders placed by the scheme and the savings they achieved.

Interested in becoming a coordinator?

Local coordinators are entitled to free membership in return for collating the monthly orders for their community. This includes collecting and sending orders to HWRA each month, informing people when the oil will arrive and how much it will cost. Coordinators don’t have to negotiate with the oil suppliers and don’t have to deal with any money.
