July SEND improvement update

Thursday, 23 July 2026

We want to keep families updated on the work taking place to improve SEND services across East Riding.

Following the SEND Inspection, partners across education, health and care have been working together to make improvements. This includes reducing waiting times for some health services, improving the quality and timeliness of Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs), strengthening support in schools, creating more opportunities for children, young people and families to influence decisions, and helping services work together more effectively.

We know this is a time of uncertainty for many families. Nationally, the Government has recently consulted on major SEND reforms, but the outcome of that consultation has not yet been published. We are still waiting to understand what any future SEND Reform Plan will mean for children, young people, families and local areas.

While we do not yet know exactly how the national SEND system may change in the future, we do know that the need to improve services for children and young people remains unchanged.

Here in East Riding, we are not waiting for national decisions before taking action. We continue to focus on the things we can influence locally, including:

  • Improving the quality of EHCPs
  • Supporting schools to be more inclusive
  • Identifying needs earlier and providing help sooner
  • Strengthening partnership working between education, health and care services
  • Increasing co-production with children, young people and parent carers
  • Focusing on outcomes and experiences for families

We recognise that some families continue to face challenges and that improvement takes time. We also understand that national discussions about SEND reform can create questions and concerns about what happens next.

Our message is simple: regardless of any future national changes, our commitment to children and young people with SEND in East Riding remains the same. We will continue working with families, schools and partners to improve services, increase inclusion and ensure children and young people receive the support they need to thrive.

Thank you to all the parents, carers, children and young people who continue to work with us and share their experiences. Your feedback is helping to shape a better SEND system for the future.
