Are you in the right place?

This content is part of our local offer. It is for parents and carers of children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).

If your child or young person does not have SEND, you can find information for them on local primary and secondary schools in our schools section.

    Introduction

Choosing a school for a child with special educational needs (SEN) or disabilities can feel like a big decision. Whether you’re looking for your child’s primary school, a new school, or their secondary school, you’ll want to find one that:

    • can meet your child’s needs
    • helps your child make friends
    • offers different activities in, and outside of, school
    • is as close to home as possible.

    Education settings

In the East Riding, children and young people can go to different types of education settings, including:

    • Maintained mainstream schools - state-funded schools run by the council.
    • Academies - state-funded schools that used to be run by the council but are now independent.
    • Independent schools - privately-funded schools that set their own rules.
    • Free schools - a type of academy that was never run by the council.
    • Alternative provision - schools for pupils who need extra support, either for a short time or long-term.
    • Pupil referral units - a type of alternative provision.
    • Special schools and Enhanced education resources - schools that support children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities who have an education, health and care plan (EHCP).

    School applications

If your child or young person has an education, health and care plan (EHCP), the special educational needs and disabilities assessment review team (SENDART) will help you with your application to your preferred school.

If your child does not have an EHCP, you must apply to your chosen school through the school admissions team.
