SEND short breaks

1.Short breaks statement

On this page:

    Introduction

Short breaks give disabled children and young people the chance to have fun, make friends, and try new things. They also give parents and carers time to themselves - just like other families get.

We have a duty to support short breaks for disabled children aged 17 or younger in the East Riding of Yorkshire.

You’ll find our short breaks statement below. The section explains the main points.

What the short breaks statement covers

Our short breaks statement explains the support available to families with disabled children and young people in our local area.

It meets the requirements set out in the law, and includes information about:

    • the different types of short breaks available
    • who can use short breaks and how we assess needs
    • how short breaks are designed to support families and carers.

We developed this statement together with parents, carers, children, and younger people to make sure it reflects what local families need.

    What we aim to offer

    We want to make sure:

    • there are enough short breaks for all children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), and their families
    • you and your family can access short breaks in your local community where possible
    • the types of breaks are varied, so you can choose what works best for your family.

    How short breaks are allocated

    It is very important that:

    • short breaks are shared out fairly
    • there are fair and transparent policies and pathways to services and support
    • families receive the relevant level of support based on:
      • the needs of their child or young person
      • their family circumstances
      • the support they have available from their network of family and friends.
