£1.8m road improvement scheme to start in Hessle and Willerby

Wednesday, 19 August 2026

A package of road improvements is due to start in Hessle and Willerby.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council is set to invest £1.8m in resurfacing works for roads and major junctions in the south west of the authority.

The extensive project is scheduled to begin on Monday 24 August and will see seven junctions being resurfaced along with necessary improvements to footpaths and drainage.

Following initial resurfacing work in Hessle and Willerby, all carried out during evening times, the highways team will then move on to work on road improvements in Anlaby, market Weighton, Howden, Snaith and North Cave.

The work will continue until December.

Hessle

The scheme will start on Monday 24 August at the junction of Boothferry Road and Heads Lane in Hessle, where all approaches to the signalised junction will be resurfaced, along with repairs to the paths and kerbing.

This first phase is expected to last up to four weeks, weather permitting.

To ensure the safety of both the public and the workforce, Heads Lane will be closed to traffic during the surfacing operations between 7pm and midnight from Monday 7 September to Friday 18 September, Monday to Friday.

Traffic on Boothferry Road will be controlled by temporary traffic signals using one half of the dual carriageway at a time.

Willerby

Also, on 24 August work will begin on the Willerby Square roundabout with kerb replacements and path repairs.

The resurfacing of the roundabout and lanes approaching will be carried out between Friday 4 September and Monday 21 September.

To safely carry out these works, the roundabout will be closed in two stages with Main Street, Carr Lane and Kingston Road eastbound being closed between Friday 4 September and Friday 11 September on evenings between 7pm and Midnight, Monday to Friday, and Beverley Road, and Kingston Road westbound closed between Monday 4 September and Friday 21 September with the same working hours.

The highways team will them move on to work on road improvements in:

  • Springfield Way, Anlaby/Junction with Wolfreton Drive and Wolfreton Road,
  • A1079/Holme Road roundabout, Market Weighton,
  • A614/M62  Howden Spur roundabouts,
  • Selby Road/Beastfair junction to county boundary, Snaith,
  • Newport Road/M62 junction into North Cave.

The work will be carried out on behalf of the council by contractor Britcon UK Ltd.

Councillor Paul West, the council's cabinet member for environment and transport, said: "These road improvements are necessary, and I want to thank residents and drivers for bearing with us."
