Age Without Limits in East Riding - Wednesday, 10 June

Wednesday, 10 June 2026

Age Without Limits Day is on Wednesday, 10 June 2026.

The annual awareness day aims to bring people together to take action to end ageism – as individuals, with friends and family, in our communities and in the workplace.

When we question ageism, we challenge it, and the more we challenge it, the more we start to change it. Together, we can create a society where age never limits anyone’s opportunity, dignity, respect or belonging.

Age Without Limits Day is also a great opportunity to celebrate and highlight how older residents in East Riding are being supported to stay active and connected through council services such as Active Communities, East Riding Leisure Healthier communities' classes and clubs, East Riding Libraries, as well as local community groups and activities.

As a council we want to ensure older residents:

  • Enjoy good social, emotional wellbeing and mental health
  • Keep physically active wherever possible
  • Understand how they can prevent poor health and wellbeing, and maintain resilience
  • Have access to a wide range of support in the community.

The council’s Joint Health and Wellbeing Strategy vision is:

An East Riding where all residents are supported to enjoy their maximum potential for health, wellbeing and participation, throughout their lives.

Have you heard of the East Riding Walking for Health scheme?

A series of free, guided walks for all ages and abilities that has been supporting people to become more active for the past 23 years, Walking for Health is ideal for anyone looking to get active, recover from illness or injury, or simply enjoy walking.

There is a walk for everyone, with all locations led by trained walk leaders who provide a safe, welcoming group environment. With over 27 different walk locations, we have sessions running from leisure centres, village halls and church halls across East Riding.

Walks range from 30 minutes to two hours. You can start at your own pace and build up gradually. There is no need to book, just turn up 15 minutes before the start.

What do I need for walking?

Walking is simple and accessible. Just wear comfortable shoes with good support, ideally loose-fitting clothing in thin layers and a bottle of water, especially on warm days. Please call ahead to check which walks allow dogs – they must be on a short lead.

Some walks may not be suitable for wheelchairs or buggies due to terrain, please contact laura.hutchinson@eastriding.gov.uk or call: 07887 653489.

Alternatively, you can contact the Active Communities team: email: active.communities@eastriding.gov.uk or call (01482) 395320 to check accessibility before attending.

Dave Battams, a walk leader for Market Weighton explains why the scheme is so successful:

It is great to be part of a group that supports people in the community to get more active through walking. We support people of any age, and it is fantastic to see the ability of some of our walkers who are in their nineties. It is also a great way to meet new friends and enjoy our wonderful countryside.

Be inspired by the Driffield Parkinson’s and MS activity group...

First set up in June 2025 by the council’s Active Communities team in partnership with East Riding Leisure (ERL) Driffield and Parkinson’s UK, the Driffield Parkinson's and MS activity group is held weekly on Thursday afternoons from 2pm to 3.30pm at the leisure centre.

This fun inclusive session is led by ERL fitness instructor Paul and supported by a dedicated group of Hull and East Yorkshire (HEY) volunteers.

Mike is a HEY volunteer who regularly supports the activity group:

The session is such a positive vibe for everyone, which is why so many volunteers sign up. It’s a win-win! Everybody feels so included.

Participant Dave adds:

The exercise is the best part. If we didn’t have the group here in Driffield, I wouldn’t be doing any exercise.

Fellow participant Brian explains:

The group has really helped me to improve my balance. Together with the physio I undertake, I don’t need to use a walking stick now. All the members are really friendly – we’re all in the same boat and we all understand each other's needs.

Withernsea Walking Netball group celebrate 10 years...

First formed back in March 2016 by the East Riding Active Communities team, England Netball's local development officer and East Riding Leisure (ERL) Withernsea, the weekly walking netball session meets on a Tuesday morning from 10am to 11am and is aimed at ladies aged 50 and older.

The group was taken over by volunteer hosts in May 2016 and continues to thrive today – they recently celebrated the 10th anniversary and the oldest member is 90 years old! Proving age really is no limit...

Volunteer host Nel (main article image left) said of the group:

It is great to see how successful the group has become over the past ten years, it's not just about the exercise, it is also about the support everyone gives each other and the friendship groups created too!

Former England Netball development officer Pauline Hardy (main article image second from right) was instrumental in setting up the group:

I started attending the weekly session when I retired and it's been one of the best things I've done, I love coming along every week - we also pick up our oldest member on the way to the session who recently celebrated her 90th birthday.
