Champney Treasure House is open to the public

Monday, 16 December 2024

Champney Treasure House, the newly renovated cultural venue in Beverley, has opened to the public after an essential period of renovation.

During a civic event which took place on Monday, 9 December, the venue was declared open by Councillor Linda Bayram, Chair of East Riding of Yorkshire Council. Councillor Bayram welcomed councillors, stakeholders, members of the local community and friends of the gallery during her speech and highlighted all of the many positive improvements which have been made to the venue.

Champney Treasure House celebrates the rich cultural history of the area and has been renamed in honour of John Edward Champney, a local businessman who in the early 20th century made several significant donations to the original Beverley Public Library and Art Gallery.

The renovated building is a centre for learning and discovery, housing the many services provided and celebrating the diverse and vibrant cultural offer of the historic venue.

The £3.3 million scheme has enabled the council to make significant improvements to the museum, archives, café area, tower viewing point, gardens, art gallery and library. The construction work was completed by Hobson & Porter, procured via the Council’s YORhub suite of frameworks.

Joe Booth, business development director at Hobson & Porter, said: “This has been a superb project to work on that has seen an extensive programme of improvements completed across both the historic Grade II listed parts of the building, as well as the newer contemporary extensions that were added in more recent years.

“Now that work is complete, there’s no doubt Champney Treasure House will become a hugely valuable cultural and community asset for Beverley once again, and we’re very proud to have played a key role in its evolution for future generations to enjoy.”

The scheme has also enabled the council to relocate The Tourist Information Centre (TIC), Beverley Customer Service Centre and Register Office to the Champney Treasure House.

New services and features such as the Champney Room, the library’s fully immersive sensory room and Changing Places facility have been introduced to the Champney Treasure House.

Councillor Nick Coultish, East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s cabinet member for culture, leisure and tourism, said: ‘’We are delighted to see that the Champney Treasure House has opened its doors to the public following its period of renovation.

‘’We have put a lot of work into bringing this new cultural destination to life, the features are fantastic and we can’t wait to hear everyone’s feedback.’’

Councillor Nigel Wilkinson, East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s cabinet member for finance and governance, said: ‘’Champney Treasure House ensures best value for money for its customers, visitors and residents of the East Riding.

‘’The venue now houses many essential services as well improved cultural spaces for our community to make the most of.’’

Champney Treasure House is welcoming visitors who want to stop by, explore the venue and provide their feedback to staff members. The team will also be able to provide information of upcoming events.
