East Riding Museums launches new ‘Bayeux Around Britain’ display showcasing ancient craftmanship

Thursday, 1 October 2026

To mark the Bayeux Tapestry coming to the British Museum in London for the first time since it was created, Champey Treasure House Museum have put together a hand-crafted ‘Bayeux Around Britain: Dyed in History’ display.

The display features the ancient skills and crafts used to create the original Bayeux Tapestry which are still used to this day, showcasing modern connections to ancient times.

Now on display upstairs in the Champney Treasure House, the display case has been produced by East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s museum team in partnership with the Battle of Stamford Bridge Heritage Society (BOSBHS) who have been researching how wool was dyed to make textiles like the Bayeux Tapestry nearly 1000 years ago.

The display case also features plants and minerals which would have been familiar to early civilisation when the Bayeux Tapestry was made between approximately 1070 to 1077 AD.

The original 70-metre-long Bayeux Tapestry is an internationally recognised art piece of great historic and cultural significance which depicts the Battle of Hastings and the Norman Conquest of England in 1066. The tapestry is currently on loan to the British Museum until July 2027.

Councillor Nick Coultish, Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure and Tourism at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: ‘’This wonderful display highlights ancient practices which were used during the creation of the Bayeux Tapestry, one of the most culturally significant tapestries in existence. Champey Treasure House is free to enter, and we hope to see lots of people there enjoying this excellent display that the museums team have created in collaboration with the Battle of Stamford Bridge Heritage Society.’’

Sally Hayes, Curator of Champney Treasure House Museum, added: ‘’It’s been such a pleasure working with Maxine and Brian at BOSBHS. I’ve discovered so much about the fascinating world of ancient dyes and weaving techniques along the way. It’s been brilliant seeing all that knowledge come together in the new display, and I’m sure our visitors are going to really enjoy exploring it!’’

Champney Treasure House is free to enter, the display runs until Sunday, 11 July.
