Goole 26 poetry competition – closing date extended

Thursday, 3 September 2026

A poetry competition run by East Riding Libraries to celebrate the Goole bicentenary has extended its closing date.

The Goole 26 competition is still open for entries from budding writers with theme of 'Goole'.

The new closing date is Friday 20 November.

Entrants are asked to write poems around their experience of living in the town, whether they are a past or current resident.

There are three categories in the competition, primary school, secondary school and adult (age 16+).

Each category will have a winner and a runner-up, with winners receiving a cash prize.

Runners-up in all categories will receive a Goole 26 commemorative salt and pepper pot cruet set.

Certificates will also be provided, with all prizes funded by the Goole Civic Society.

Poems submitted must be no longer than 45 lines.

This poetry competition has been introduced due to the success of the East Riding Festival of Words Poetry Competition, which runs annually and welcomes entrants from around the world.

Councillor Nick Coultish, cabinet member for culture, leisure, tourism and planning at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “There is still time to get your entries in for this poetry competition, which is a great chance to celebrate Goole in a creative way and show your pride in the town for its 200th year."

To enter the competition, poems need to be submitted to Goole library, either via email: goole.library@eastriding.gov.uk or via a hard copy handed in to library staff. All poems will be judged anonymously.
