Goole Museum calling for people to take part in ‘Goole-Built’ shipyard project

Friday, 24 October 2025

Goole Museum is calling on the local community to help bring the town’s shipbuilding heritage to life in its upcoming exhibition, ‘Goole-Built’.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s Goole Museum is inviting former shipyard workers, their families, and anyone with a connection to the shipyard to share memories, photographs, and objects that tell the story of Goole’s maritime past.

The museum is also looking to feature photographs of shipyard workers and exhibit objects like tools, apprenticeship indentures and union cards for their displays.

The team at Goole Museum are also seeking family members who can pass on the stories or objects of relatives who worked in the yard, this includes the many women who were employed in shipbuilding during the Second World War.

Councillor Nick Coultish, cabinet member for culture, tourism and leisure at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “This is a fascinating project that will resonate deeply with the local community.

‘’Goole’s shipyard has played a vital role in the town’s history and economy, and the ‘Goole-Built’ exhibition will honour that legacy by showcasing the voices and experiences of those who lived it.”

Museum curator, Alex Ombler added: “Shipbuilding was once a major industry in Britain. Goole’s shipyard and its workers were very much part of this tradition.

“In fact, the yard’s rivetters, welders, shipwrights and many other workers were considered amongst the finest tradesmen in the country.

‘’The materials gathered with the community will ensure that the exhibition is very much by, for and of the people of Goole.”

The ‘Goole Built’ exhibition will run between 10 January and 14 March 2026.

Goole Museum is hosting a memory café on Friday, 24 October, 10am to 12 noon which aims to reunite old shipyard friends over a coffee.

To get in touch with the museum, people are asked to telephone or visit during opening hours, Tuesday - Friday, 10am-5pm, Saturday 9am - 4pm.

To email the team contact museum curator Alex Ombler at: alex.ombler@goolemuseum.gov.uk or by phone on 01405 768963.
