Happy World Social Work Day!

Tuesday, 18 March 2025

Tuesday, 18 March marks World Social Work Day, a global celebration of the invaluable contributions social workers make to individuals, families, and communities every day.

This year’s theme, ‘Strengthening Intergenerational Solidarity for Enduring Wellbeing,’ highlights the critical role social workers play in fostering strong connections between generations, ensuring sustainable and long-lasting support for those they serve.

Merlin Joseph, Executive Director of Children, Families and Schools, said:

“In East Riding, our children’s social workers make an incredible difference to the lives of children and families. They are not only advocates for children’s rights, safety, and wellbeing but also vital in working alongside schools, health services, and families to provide essential support. World Social Work Day is a moment to acknowledge their dedication and celebrate their impact—work that often goes unseen but changes lives in lasting ways.”

To mark the day, we’re sharing the experiences of some of our brilliant social workers:

Tom Gregory, Manager of the Pathway Service, reflects on why he loves his work:

“Social work is about being part of young people’s journeys, guiding them from childhood to independence. It’s a privilege to witness their growth and achievements as they transition into adulthood. Seeing their successes and knowing we’ve played a role in shaping their future is one of the greatest rewards.”

Troy Hogarth, Social Work Apprentice, shares his thoughts on the challenges and rewards of the profession:

“Every day in social work is different, with new challenges that require flexibility and resilience. But when we take a step back and reflect, we see the positive changes we’ve helped bring about in our communities. That’s what makes it all worthwhile.”

Vicky Clarke, Effective Practice Mentor, and Vicky Moloney, Practice Developmenet Manager are two of the many dedicated professionals who ensure best practices are embedded into our work, shaping the next generation of social workers and strengthening intergenerational solidarity.

Vicky said: "As an Army veteran, I started my studies of becoming a social worker 8 years ago and it is often asked how I connected the two vast professions. The answer has always been clear, that I have always felt a strong desire to change the world. During my career as a social worker, I have felt the utmost privilege to have an opportunity to work with children and their families, to listen to them, build on their strengths and support them to create positive changes. I am committed to social justice, equality and advocating for the vulnerable in society to be seen. I have come to realise, whilst I may not have the power to change the world, I can empower others to discover the strength to transform their lives and reach their full potential.

"I take pride in working for the East Riding of Yorkshire Council, where we foster a culture of learning and relational practice; aimed at making positive differences and driving change. I feel valued that my contributions are recognised where I have received support for my growth and development, along with the flexibility that considers my wellbeing and family. I currently work within our academy, collaborating with incredible colleagues to support aspiring social workers in taking the next step in their careers. Once again, I feel immense pride and privilege in witnessing the remarkable achievements they are making. #strongertogether."

Jane said: "My journey into social work began over 15 years ago, influenced by my personal experiences and a desire to support and help children, young people, and families. Throughout this time, I have worked in various roles and found my current position as Practice Development Manager particularly rewarding. This role has provided me the opportunity to collaborate with a highly dedicated and motivated team. Together, we have the privilege of nurturing and supporting the development and progress of our workforce, which truly highlights the importance and power of teamwork and collective effort. Every day in this role is incredibly rewarding and inspiring."
