Hull man prosecuted for fly-tipping washing machine near Beverley

Tuesday, 18 March 2025

A man from Hull has been prosecuted for fly-tipping a washing machine in Woodmansey, near Beverley.

Andrew Peace, of Washington Street, Hull, was caught on private CCTV as he dumped a washing machine on Long Lane, Woodmansey.

Peace pleaded guilty to an offence of fly-tipping when he appeared at Hull Magistrates’ Court on Friday 28 February.

He was sentenced to a six-month conditional discharge and was ordered to pay costs of £150 and a £26 victim surcharge.

The court heard Peace was captured on private CCTV cameras dumping the washing machine in Long Lane, Woodmansey on 26 March 2023, and the incident was reported to East Riding of Yorkshire Council.

The fly-tipping was investigated by the council’s streetscene enforcement officers. Peace was identified and was originally issued with a fixed penalty for the offence in January last year, but he failed to pay, and the case was taken to court.

He failed to appear at court for the first hearing, so a warrant was issued.

Residents are responsible for disposing of their own waste properly and legally by using household wheelie bins provided or by taking larger items of waste to their local household waste recycling site.

They can also hire registered waste carriers or the council’s own bulky waste service to take away larger items.

Carl Skelton, director of streetscene services at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “Thanks to the resident who captured this incident on camera because we were able to prosecute the culprit.

“People are always encouraged to report any fly-tipping to us, and we will investigate and take action when we can.”

Anyone caught fly-tipping in the East Riding could be ordered to pay a fixed penalty of up to £1,000 or the case could be taken to court, where they face an unlimited fine or even imprisonment.
