Join our Time to Talk Day webinar – let’s make conversations easier

Thursday, 15 January 2026

This Time to Talk Day, four organisations across our region, including East Riding of Yorkshire Council, are coming together to make conversations about mental health feel easier for everyone.

Hull & East Yorkshire Mind (HEY Mind), East Riding of Yorkshire Council, Hull City Council and Citizens Advice Hull & East Riding are jointly hosting a free one-hour webinar on Thursday, 5 February - and everyone is invited, from residents to partners.

  • Thursday, 5 February 2026
  • 12.30 to 1.30pm (online)
  • Free to attend.

This session is designed to help anyone who wants to know how to check-in with someone who might be struggling - whether that's a colleague, resident, neighbour, friend or family member.

What the session will cover:

  • Why talking about mental health matters
  • Simple, practical ways to ask someone how they are
  • How to check-in without pressure or feeling like you need to “fix” things
  • What to do if someone opens up
  • Local support and signposting across Hull and East Riding.

Whether you are part of a workplace, school, community group, or supporting someone at home - this session will give you tools you can use right away.

Recent UK mental health research shows:

  • 1 in 4 adults experience a mental health problem each year
  • Around 1 in 6 adults report a common mental disorder (such as anxiety or depression) at any one time
  • Young people are disproportionately affected, with around 1 in 5 aged 17–19 reporting symptoms of anxiety and/or depression.

Despite these figures, many people say they avoid talking about mental health due to fear of stigma or not knowing what to say - highlighting the importance of simple, human conversations.

The free online webinar will form part of a wider local campaign, offering a deeper look at how to start a conversation and support someone who opens up.

Adam Gibson, the council's public health lead for mental health and suicide prevention, said:

The East Riding is known for its strong sense of community, where checking on a neighbour or asking after someone’s wellbeing is something we do without thinking. This campaign reflects and amplifies that culture, encouraging staff, residents and our partners to pause and make space for the conversations that often get missed.

Talking about mental health does not need to be a grand gesture - it can be one sentence, one text, or one meaningful moment. We welcome this focus on practical skills and everyday connection, and we hope everyone across the East Riding will use these tools in ways that feel right for them.
