Lelley Fields welcomes people to memorial and open day

Tuesday, 9 June 2026

Lelley Fields Crematorium is opening its doors to invite people to two special events this summer.

The venue, in Sproatley Road, Preston, Holderness, is welcoming people to attend a midsummer memorial service and an open day.

A one-hour midsummer memorial service will be held in the site’s Oak Hall on Thursday 18 June at 6.30pm, offering people the chance to remember and pay their respects to loved ones they’ve lost and pay tribute if they wish.

As part of the service, the names and photos of those being remembered will be displayed on a television screen in the hall, if people would like.

People attending will also be invited to add those names or short messages on to paper leaves, which will be hung on memorial trees inside the hall.

At a later date, the leaves - which are biodegradable and infused with wildflower seeds - will be planted in the crematorium grounds, where they will grow into a lasting wildflower display.

The service will be followed by refreshments.

The crematorium will be hosting an open day on Saturday 11 July from 9.30am-1.30pm, offering a rare opportunity to go behind the scenes at the crematorium.

Staff will be giving guided tours, people can chat with local funeral directors and other industry professionals, enjoy informative talks and refreshments.

Both events are free and open to all, whether or not you have used the crematorium before.

Councillor Paul West, the council’s cabinet member for environment and transport, said: “Lelley Fields is a very friendly, welcoming place and I’m really pleased people will get to see that as it opens its doors for these two events.

“Maybe you’d like to remember a loved one and pay your respects, or you’re curious to see how a crematorium works and have questions you’ve always wanted to know, then please come along.”

Places for the midsummer memorial service are limited, please book by email lelleyfields@eastriding.gov.uk or call 01482 392910.
