Stoptober is back and East Riding of Yorkshire Council is calling on residents who smoke to join millions of others who have quit successfully with the campaign.

Over five million adults in England still smoke. Smoking causes 75,000 deaths a year, making it the biggest cause of preventable illness and death.

Quitting smoking is one of the best things you can do for your health. The good news is, if you quit smoking for 28 days, you are five times more likely to quit for good.

Going ‘cold turkey’ is still the most common way that people attempt to give up, but quit attempts are successful more often when using quit smoking support.

That’s why this year’s Stoptober campaign is encouraging smokers to quit this October by exploring the free support available. The council and public health wants aspiring quitters in East Riding to know that they have their back and by taking part in Stoptober, they are more likely to succeed.

There’s a wide range of free quitting tools out there, including expert support from the council's local stop smoking service Healthier Futures in partnership with Xyla.

The East Riding 12-week quit smoking programme Healthier Futures, offers one-to-one support, a personalised plan and a choice of nicotine replacement therapy.

Residents can fill in a referral form at: www.healthier-futures.co.uk or call the team on: 0330 236 9102.

No matter how long you have been smoking, how many times you might have tried to quit before, whatever your age – Healthier Futures is here for you.

Hear from East Riding residents who have recently been through the council's Quit Smoking programme:

“Just go for it, there is life after smoking and it is a better one.”

“Quitting smoking without support is difficult. Having support from a health coach really encouraged me to keep going.”

“After smoking for 63 years, I have finally quit smoking cigarettes  yes, I do still use a vape from time to time, but I do feel healthier for giving up cigarettes. My breathing is much better and so are my taste buds, I can now really taste my food which makes it far more enjoyable! I have also noticed I have more money to spend on things which I enjoy, like going out for lunch or dinner.”

“I liked knowing that I would receive regular phone calls from my lifestyle coach. I am no longer coughing and have more energy. It is a very supportive service that has given me the confidence that I can remain a non-smoker after 25 years of smoking.”
